Planning your visit
Know before you go: tickets, timing, security
The Colosseum runs on timed entry. Most tickets carry a specific slot, and that slot is the difference between walking straight in and watching a two-hour queue inch forward in the sun. When you book with us, the slot is already reserved: your confirmation tells you when to arrive, and your host keeps an eye on the clock so you do not have to.
Security works like a small airport. Every visitor passes a bag check, and large luggage, glass bottles and aerosols are typically turned away, with no left-luggage facility on site. Travel light: a small daypack, a refillable water bottle (Rome's nasoni fountains run cold and free just outside) and a hat in summer are all you really need.
Understand the three ticket levels before you choose. Regular entry covers the first and second tiers, looking down into the arena from where the Roman crowd once sat. Arena Floor tickets add the reconstructed arena itself, entered through the Gladiator's Gate. Underground tickets descend into the Hypogeum, the backstage machine of corridors and lift shafts beneath the floor, and access is so limited that these typically sell out first. All three include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Timing shapes the whole experience. The first entries of the morning and the last two hours of the afternoon are typically the calmest and, in summer, the coolest. Midday brings the biggest crowds and the strongest sun to a monument with very little shade. Photographers should note that the exterior arches glow at golden hour, which is exactly when our sunset photo walks are scheduled.
Finally, budget your energy honestly. The full circuit of Colosseum, Forum and Palatine covers several kilometres on ancient paving, so wear proper walking shoes and plan a long lunch afterwards. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, tell us when you book and we will steer you toward the elevator-served, ground-level formats.

Meet your host
Tours typically gather near the Colosseo metro exit, a short walk from the monument. Your host checks everyone in, hands over the pre-booked tickets and shares a quick briefing on the site, the route and where the best views hide.

With a timed slot already reserved, you move through the dedicated entrance lane and airport-style security. Minutes later you are standing inside the largest amphitheatre the Roman world ever built, before the walk-up line has moved at all.
The heart of the visit
The tiers, or the Arena Floor itself
On the first and second tiers the whole elliptical bowl opens up beneath you. On Arena Floor tours you enter through the Gladiator's Gate and stand at the centre of it; Underground tours descend further, into the Hypogeum corridors where fighters and animals once waited.
The second act
The Roman Forum along the Via Sacra
Your ticket continues into the Roman Forum, the political heart of the ancient city. You walk the Via Sacra past temples, basilicas and triumphal arches, with your host connecting the ruins back to the stories you heard inside the arena.
The finale
Palatine Hill and the long view
The visit typically closes on the Palatine Hill, where Rome legendarily began. From the terraces you look back over the Forum and across to the Colosseum, the perfect last photograph before gelato in Monti.

Do I need to book Colosseum tickets in advance?

What is Arena Floor access at the Colosseum?

A standard Colosseum visit takes 60 to 90 minutes. Add the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, included with every ticket, and you should budget 3 to 4 hours in total. Private tours with Underground and Belvedere access can take up to 3 hours inside the Colosseum alone.
Are the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill included?
Yes. Every Colosseum ticket we book includes access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, valid on the same visit. Walk the Via Sacra, see the temple ruins and finish with panoramic views over the city from the Palatine.
Is the Colosseum suitable for children and less mobile visitors?
The main level is stroller and wheelchair accessible via elevators, and children under 18 enter free with ID. The Underground and upper tiers involve stairs and uneven surfaces, so choose a ground-level or hosted entry option if mobility is a concern. Ask us and we will recommend the right format.
What is the difference between regular, Arena Floor and Underground tickets?
Regular entry covers the first and second tiers, with views down into the arena from above. Arena Floor tickets add entry through the Gladiator's Gate onto the reconstructed arena itself. Underground tickets go one level further, down into the Hypogeum corridors beneath the floor, and typically include the Arena Floor as well. Every level includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Does the Colosseum use timed entry?
