Sixteen places, three or four walkable days
Rome looks overwhelming on a map and surprisingly gentle on foot. These sixteen destinations cluster naturally into a handful of walkable days. The ancient city makes one: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill share a single ticket and a single morning, with the Appian Way waiting further out for travellers with an extra afternoon.
The historic centre makes another, and it is the most walkable square mile in Europe: the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori and the Spanish Steps all sit within a few hundred metres of one another, stitched together by lanes that reward getting slightly lost.
West of the river, a third day pairs Vatican City and Castel Sant'Angelo in the morning with Trastevere and the Gianicolo terrace at sunset. However you group them, most of these places appear on our tours, which is exactly why we wrote these guides.
